Working in The Bicycle Industry

Your work is going to fill a large part of your life, and the only way to be truly satisfied is to do what you believe is great work. And the only way to do great work is to love what you do.
— Steve Jobs

Bicycles are the future of transportation in urban areas, however there are a number of reasons the bicycle boom is here to stay and taking a seat on a two-wheeler is easier and cheaper than ever before. The reasons for the bicycle boom can be summarised into these five broad categories;

Health - The health benefits of even a gentle, short cycle are well documented. What the pandemic has introduced is a permanent change to the public health situation, where many people will look for ‘safer’ forms of public transportation. Rather than enduring a 15-minute commute on a jam-packed train, tram or bus, many will view a bike or scooter as a healthy, less risky alternative.

Going Green – No matter what your philosophical stance on climate change or ‘green’ initiatives are, the reality is the world is turning green and we all need to contribute to the future health of the planet. That might mean investing in an electric car, taking public transport or riding a bike to work or just using those pins we all have to get around. The contribution can be small and simple, and I think most people now believe they can make a real difference even in a small way.

E-Bikes – Many industry insiders believe E-bikes are well on the way to becoming the dominant form of bicycles sold throughout the world. With current sales and trends, it is hard to argue with this logic and as pricing of E-bikes comes down even further in 2022, I think it will not be long before there is at least one E-bike in every household that owns bicycles.

Bike design, technology & affordability – E-Bikes again feature here, but it also the design, features and technology of normal pedal bicycles that is leading to an explosion of ownership and use. Folding bikes, step-through designs, low weight and integrated lighting & communication technology are just a few examples that lead to greater accessibility to more people who may not have considered a bicycle previously. Equally, quality pedal bikes are also way cheaper than they were 10 years ago, led by modernised manufacturing, stiff competition and multiple new brand entries into the market.

Traffic Jams – This needs no explanation to anyone who lives and works in a city. As the commute becomes increasingly dire in urban centres, more city planners are integrating bicycle infrastructure into road and city developments. ‘The pandemic is providing an interesting opportunity to reshape mobility in cities, and to do so specifically around electric bicycle-centered plans: positioned as an alternative to public transport at a time when attempts are being made to maintain social distance, some reports conclude the electric bicycle is the future of urban transport.’ Enrique Dans, Forbes May2020

Who is going to maintain and service all these bicycles?

This is particularly the case for E-Bikes with their complex componentry, motors, batteries and drivetrains. The answer may not be as simple as you think. The bicycle industry is not immune to the side-effects of growth and success; that being the potentially debilitating employee shortages. This is especially the case in technical roles, like bicycle mechanics, where the shortages are long standing and a significant burden on all employers. Ask any owner of the 1000+ bike stores in Australia and the first thing they will ask is; “how do I find a qualified mechanic?”

If you want to develop a career in an industry focused around a product you love, then you could be in for the ride of your life. Look at some of the roles you could end up working in after getting some of the relevant experience you need;

  • Professional Bicycle Mechanics
